Zero-Click Searches Climb Further in 2026, New Study Finds
A new analysis finds that the share of Google searches ending without a click to any website — including organic results, ads, and Google's own properties — continued climbing into 2026. Researchers say the trend predates AI-generated summaries but has accelerated alongside their rollout.
The same analysis found only a small fraction of searches are currently shifting into Google's more conversational AI Mode experience, suggesting traditional AI Overviews embedded directly in search results remain the dominant AI-driven surface affecting publisher traffic for now.
For smaller website owners, the shift reinforces a theme showing up across multiple 2026 industry reports: being cited or mentioned within an AI-generated answer, even without a click, is increasingly treated as a visibility outcome worth tracking in its own right, alongside traditional traffic numbers.
