Is Google Sites Really Free? What You Need to Know Before You Build
What You Get for Free
Google Sites includes unlimited pages, a handful of templates, embeds for Docs, Sheets, Slides, Forms, and Maps, and hosting on a *.google.com or a mapped custom domain if you separately own one. There's no subscription requirement and no builder-branded watermark forced onto your pages.
What's Missing
There is no built-in blog: no RSS feed, no post categories, no comment system. Design customization is limited to a small set of themes and layout blocks — there's no pixel-level control like you'd get with Wix or a coded site.
Google Sites also doesn't natively support e-commerce checkout, and while it connects to Google Analytics, deeper technical SEO controls (custom robots.txt, sitemap submission tweaks) are limited compared to a self-hosted site.
Who Google Sites Is Actually Good For
Simple informational sites, internal team pages, school and classroom projects, and one-off event pages are where Google Sites performs best — situations where update frequency is low and design needs are minimal.
